History

Manning School District #45 History

The land for Manning School was donated by Dan Manning in about 1884 and the school was named after him. He went on to establish the town of Manning, North Dakota which sometimes causes confusion. We are Manning district #45. The district consists of Missouri Township in Burleigh County. The first teacher was Flora Smith before she married John B. Irvine in 1884. At one time there were two buildings in the district, with the second located in Missouri Township Section 8, just off the south end of 66th St. The building located at the current site was the first and original Manning School. It had a furnace in the basement with a register above. It had no running water and outdoor toilets. The families took turns bringing water. The original school building on this site burned down in the spring of 1981. The cause was never known. The students finished the 1981 year in the Apple Creek school building. The present building was built in the summer of 1981 and was ready for school in the fall. There have been many students pass through Manning school in its over 130-year history and we welcome you as the latest generation in the legacy of Manning School students.
